Noted for her “commanding and dramatic presence” (Opera News), mezzo-soprano Renée Tatum has garnered recognition in the most demanding operatic repertoire. Ms. Tatum most recently appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Margret in Berg’s Wozzeck. She made her Atlanta Opera debut as Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, and she performed with the Metropolitan Opera in Rigoletto. Ms. Tatum’s relationship with The Met spans twelve years and nearly one hundred performances including as Fenena in Verdi’s Nabucco, Third Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Waltraute and Flosshilde in Robert LePage’s famed production of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen.

Ms. Tatum recently sang in Wagner’s Götterdammerung in Taiwan and Parsifal for Indiana University Opera Theatre and in Rochester Philharmonic’s production of Virgil Thompson’s The Mother of Us All. She has been heard as Flosshilde and Waltraute in San Francisco Opera’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, Flosshilde in Das Rheingold at the Tanglewood Festival, Francisca in West Side Story at Grand Tetons Music Festival, and Jenny in Threepenny Opera for Boston Lyric Opera. 

Concert performances include Penderecki’s Credo with Indianapolis Symphony, Duruflé’s Requiem with Back Bay Chorale, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Cecelia Chorus of New York. She sang the role of Gabriele Berlatier for the Romantic Century’s production of Van Gogh’s Ear. Ms. Tatum is a graduate of the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and California State University Fullerton.

Pianist Douglas Sumi is a frequent collaborator with vocal artists and opera theaters. He is a versatile pianist, coach, and conductor recognized for his commitment to song and opera. He has worked with great opera stars including Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming, the latter with whom he collaborated in recital after their work together in A Streetcar Named Desire. He also coaches many emerging young singers and has performed throughout Europe and North America. 

Mr. Sumi served for many seasons at Los Angeles Opera. His resume includes the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD, New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Wolf Trap Opera Company, Indianapolis Opera, Centro Studi Lirica, among many opera companies. He has given master classes at St. Petersburg Conservatory and Galina Vishnevskaya’s Opera Center. In Mexico, he premiered Roger Bourland’s La Paloma y el Ruiseñor at the Cultural Festival of Mazatlán. He currently serves on the faculty at Boston University’s School of Music.
